AGRA in Tanzania
In Tanzania, AGRA is working across the food value chain. One focus
is in the Southern Highlands, where AGRA programs have provided farmers
with innovative financing and high-yield crop varieties, and forged
partnerships with private seed companies and small agro dealers.
Meanwhile, the government's targeted subsidy program is facilitating
farmers' access to farm inputs. These complimentary initiatives are a
key reason 700,000 smallholder farmers in the Southern Highlands were
able to produce a record maize harvest in 2009, helping to feed
drought-stricken regions of the country.
AGRA's public and private sector partners in Tanzania include the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperatives, NEPAD, the National Microfinance Bank Ltd., Kilimo Trust, Sokoine University, private seed companies, farmers' cooperatives and others.
