The African Union Commission and the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding last Thursday that will enhance agricultural transformation in Africa, and fast track the attainment of a green revolution and food security. The agreement was signed during the third African Green Revolution Forum, in Maputo, Mozambique.

Even in the face of strong economic growth over the last decade in many African countries, nearly 25% of all African’s – some 240 million people – don’t get enough to eat to live normal, healthy, and productive lives. Even in Kenya, which has an agricultural system that is amongst the most developed in Africa, undernourishment hoovers at about 30% of our population, with a large share of those being children under the age of five. This persistent problem is simply unacceptable. We have the resources and the technologies to meet this challenge. What we need are more creative public/private partnerships, coupled with the political will necessary to rapidly change current realities on the ground.
